cluster with 64 bits processors on Linux - available choices

Hi,

I have 4 boxes, each one with 2 AMD Opteron CPUs and 4GB of RAM, and I'd like to put them together into a cluster. Right now we want to be able to parallelize (does that word exists?) processes, so I thought OpenMosix (OM) would be the right choice. However, OpenMosix does not seem to have 64 bits support yet. However (!) I found
this page, which says OM does have 64 bits support, but this statement has no support in other places like the maillists and the OM webpage

I could use OpenMosix with the machines, if I install them a 32 bits processor, but that doesn't seems like a good choice; I would be wasting 32 bits. But I found some people doing precisely this

I talked to a friend about this and he says the he would go installing a 64 bits Linux, and VMWare, to create 32 bits virtual machines on each server, and configure each of these virtual machines with openmosix. I really don't know if this would be better than going with 32 bits Linux on each box, or even if it would work

On the other hand, I could try a Beowulf, but, does it migrate processes? from what the FAQ says, it is not clear

Quote:
Greg Lindahl: If you just want to run the same program a few thousand times with different input files, a shell script will suffice.
and, as far as I know, it requires to modify the source code of your programs to make use of the cluster.

so the question is: do any of you have built a performance aimed cluster with Linux on 64 bits processors? on top of which technology? I have google'd a bit, but it seems that
a) it is not possible, or very tricky, or (and far more more likely)
b) I'm not asking google properly

Any pointers, highlights, even RTFM (stating which Fine Manual to Read, of course) are greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

Maybe you might want to try out the CentOS Cluster server;

http://www.centos.org/modules/news/a...hp?storyid=108

or at least review;
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/docs/html/rh-cs-en-4/

I'll leave you with this tiny bit of trickery;

echo '16i[q]sa[ln0=aln100%Pln100/snlbx]sbA0D4D465452snlbxq' | dc

Hint: type that out (or cut and paste) in the console or xterm session.
