close to converting all pc's in my home - help with games
Hi everyone,
I've made a complete switch away from windows myself in the last two years and I've even gotten my wife interested in linux recently, but we've got a major barrier at this point that I haven't figured out a way to resolve. The main activities that my wife and kids use their computers for are for playing online games such as Yahoo games, Gametap, RealArcade, etc.
I've tried each of these services via Cedega, Wine, and Crossover Linux Standard with no luck.
Can anyone point me in a direction or give me some news they've heard towards finding solutions for these types of services? The only other viable option I see at this point is to use virtualization of windows, but I don't gain anything (in the way of not paying those people).
I was under the impression Yahoo games was a browser thing? Or maybe that was Pogo, there are so many of them anymore. Google does seem rather useless in terms of GameTap on WINE and such.
Personally, part of my conversion away from Windows was finally ridding myself of PC gaming. I was never a great fan of it, I find PC gaming rather tedious, with the patches, configuration, trying to find a game, etc. Since moving over to Linux full time, I only game on consoles now. It is a much better experience, as far as I am concerned, I just go buy a game and pop it right in there. I don't have to worry if my video card drivers are the correct version or any other crap.
I guess buying the family a used Xbox and putting some emulators and homebrew games on it isn't the option you were looking for?
Most of these gaming services now require downloads and installs for each game which hoses things up. I've been an 'avid' gamer, to say the least, for years now and still play some high end games on windows myself, but I'm only one game away from being able to play the major ones on Linux. We do have an Xbox, but with 4 kids, it's a never ending fight over the one machine, so I built them all computers It's probably a bigger issue for my wife and oldest child as they've been playing these types of games for years. I'm hoping as cedega grows, it will adapt to these things. The biggest problem I see is that many of these platforms are now using shockwave, which to my knowledge, is not supported at all in linux yet.
