Clementine doesn't play anything, greys out playlist

Hello everyone! It's great to be back to Debian!

Only Clementine is not playing any of my music files - flac, mp3 - nothing. All it does is greying out the playlist items one after another in seconds.

I thought of codec problems and checked and made sure all necessary codecs were installed. But the problem persists.

This time I installed Debian keeping my Home partition from the previous Ubuntu set-up. Later, I brought all my music files to the Music folder in my Home. So, I wondered if there was any kind of permission-related problem or so. But VLC plays the files alright, which I believe says there's none.

So, what's happening here with Clementine?

Try reconfiguring and rescanning the collection - system changes can cause harddisk/partition guid changes, which confuse amarok. I don't know about clementine (old amarok 1.4 codebase), but I suspect it is the same.

Thanks cepheus, but rescanning the library didn't work. I don't know what it could be but I've decided to install Banshee and see if it can read the files. I have a feeling it would. Maybe after that I'll remove/purge clementine and reinstall it.

...unless anyone can show me other possibilities.

Like I anticipated, Banshee played all files alright. It's definitely a problem with Clementine. But I don't understand.

Could removing and re-installing Clementine solve it!!!

Perhaps. More likely, there's something in your user configuration (~/.config/Clementine) that got corrupted or Clementine does not like. You could try backing that directory up or deleting it if you do not mind losing your Clementine preference and having to rescan your collection)

<<sigh>> That didn't make any change in Clementine's behaviour! Now I'm gonna try that remove-reinstall thing...

If reinstalling Clementine fixes the issue, I would suspect a bad hard disk or rootkit.

No, seasons, reinstalling after complete removal of the package didn't resolve the problem. Clementine still refuses to play anything. Two other software - VLC and Banshee - have no such problem.

I don't understand this, but putting the music files where they were in the Home partition location from my previous installation solved the problem! I'm not sure why I even thought of putting them back in their previous location - maybe frustration, maybe experimentation - but this still seems very weird to me.

Because while all other players were able to play the music files in their new Home location, I don't understand why Clementine could not. As far as I recall, I moved the files first and then installed Clementine (I don't know if this information means anything at all).

Anyway, Clementine is back at work, and I'm happy!
