clean install graphics help

I am trying to install RedHat 9 on my XP Pro workstation. I have installed RedHat using a different HD (using media trays) with only small issuses. I have never had a perfect install on Linux, mainly graphic drivers install. I am trying to install RedHat on XP Pro OS using Virtual PC 2004 . After the start up, all I get is a black screen with unreadable text. My question is, during the boot, I get the option to press "C" for command mode. Is this a true enough command mode to install a grapics driver? I have never used Linux and wanted to try and break away from the microsoft tit. I have the updated drivers in .RPM form from ATI website. How do I boot to a command mode, get to the point I can switch to a CD-Rom drive and install the .RPM? I know nothing of the Linux command line or the syntax envolved, so any replies should be in the form of a reply to a two year old. If you can give me any links to the basic command line syntax... that would be great also. Thanks.

I am confused. Are you trying to install Linux, of you have already installed it and you want to install graphic drivers for your video card?

If it's the first case, just boot from the first installation CD and follow the graphic procedure from there. You won't need any special graphic driver for this.

If it's the graphic card driver what you want to install, I would recommend you to log into your user account with any window manager (KDE or Gnome are friendly to begin with) and use any of the package managers that Red Hat must have (sorry, I use Mandrake). Or if you want to do it from the command line:

rpm -Uivh /path/to/package/name-of-package.rpm

Remember that you will need root privileges to install packages.

Hope this helps, though I'm not really sure...

I have RedHat 9 installed on my Windows Xp Pro machine in Virtual PC 2004. The problem is, when I complete the install, the first boot screen is black and unreadable. I also have to same, exactly the same problem with my install of Mandrake 9. What I was trying to ask, coming from a windows stand point, is there a way I can boot to a command line, mount a CD-Rom (which I have no clue on how to do) and install the .RPM drivers I got from ATI web page. As I said before, I do not have any experience with the command line with Linux. Thanks for your reply.
