Choosing FTP server. proFTPd, vsFTPd, PureFTPd?

I'm desiding which FTP server to install and would like to get some "objectve" :) info on the issue.
Many people recommend vsFTPd, proFTPd and pureFTPd. Which one would be better, for which situations and why. Please, post your opinios (preferably supported by some facts ;)) or perhaps links to some reviews/comparisons.

I think this info might be very useful for many noobs (like me) out there.

I use only ProFTPd. It's easy to configure, powerful and secure. That's reason enough for me.

Well speaking of ProFTPd and secure I'd like you to point to
ProFTPD ASCII File Remote Compromise Vulnerability.

I prefer for performance, stability AND security vsftpd; I've set up a small document describing a secure setup: http://www.markus-welsch.de/linux/services/

From the Pure-ftp home page:

Unlike other popular FTP servers, the number of root exploits found since the very first released version is zero.

I'd go with Pure-ftpd.

I am using wu-ftpd and i found quite reliable and stable, easy to configure.
But if some time wu-ftpd giving me a trouble, i am sure i will go to vsftpd.

Pure-FTPd
Secure, simple, lite, was what I wanted.

Any more opinions?

Web server?
I don't think just that would cut it for me. I am going to setup webserver, as well as FTP server. But so far I'm still not sure which FTP server would be better. From looking at their home websites I can tell that Pure-FTPd has LOTS of very nice features, proFTPd just recently had a very bad security hole and vsFTPd seems to be very popular server with big company names (at least in Nov 2002).
Right now I'm leaning towards Pure-FTPd. Anybody is willing to convince me in otherwise? I'm open to suggestions.

I will not going to give it a try to convice you since it is your decision and your security and time is affected. You should check out your favourite ftp servers and decide YOURSELF which you think of as secure (and why) and which not.

It would be nice to post your resume here then.

Please, convince me...

And believe me, I would, if I knew enough about security (or breaking one). Unfortunately, I don't have enough expertise in that area. That's why I'm asking advice from people who might... So, maybe YOU can tell me, why one server is more secure than another. I would love to learn more about this topic, and I'm sure other newbies on this forum would too.

markus1982 11-07-2003 12:49 PM

Well it depends the way code is written, the default configuration options, your personal configuration and of course on a lot of more...

ZiGiE 12-01-2003 04:11 PM

Boy, I sure expected much more replies that this... ;)
I guess not that many people use FTP server, or not that many care what FTP server they use :D
For now I'm gonna stick with proFTPd because it comes prepackaged with my Slackware. Also, I'm gonna keep an eye on what's going on in FTP server word (more security vulnarabilities) and pick a winner.

Cheers.

Considering the evaluations above, any server would work in a situation, however generally speaking:

• If you want a server with the most flexible configuration options and external modules: ProFTPd
• If you have just a few users and want a simple, secure FTP server: PureFTPd
• If you want to run a FTP server at scale with many users: vsftpd
