check for Buffer I/O Errors


hi

Howto check a hard disk for Buffer I/O Errors and fix them using linux Live CD, without damaging OS?

If it's a plain partition then umount it if mounted then run 'fsck' on it. If the partition is on LVM then you need to enable that layer first with 'vgchange -ay'. OTOH if it's a hardware problem that can't be fixed with running 'badblocks' for relocation then you're probably SOL.

No guarantees there. You make backups regularly, right?

It doesn't really matter what it means. What is important is what is causing it: vermin-infested casings, Mars and Venus colliding, maltreated and dying hardware, badly seated cables, disk surface crapola, driver or kernel b0rkage, you name it.

iostat -e and -E should report soft and hard errors.
