Changing the XF86Config outside GUI

i've managed to set my screen resolution in the XF86Config file, however the monitor doesnt support 1152x864 at this refresh rate.

When i boot linux, i boots perfectly, however just as it logs into the GUI the screen goes blank. i press Ctrl+Alt+F3 and it switches perfectly to the command promt screen.

how can i edit the XF86Config from this command prompt?

'xf86config'

:)

Or just 'editor of your choice /etc/X11/XF86Config' or wherever it may be on your system. Think it's always there.
