changing resolution of screen on LFS

I have build an LFS system with IceWM. The resolution i get is 800x600. How do i change this to 1024xz768? i attempted to edit the xorg.conf file by hand to comment out the following portion in "screen section"
Code:
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 16
		Modes	"800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
and i left xorg.conf left with only this "screen" entry..
Code:
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 24
		Modes	"1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
but that leaves some black blank space on the left and top of my screen when i restart xserver next time. So i guess thats not the best way to change the resolution.
Pls guide.
TIA

PS: I own a Samtron 45bn monitor (if that matters...)

can you make direct adjustments to the monitor??

horiz size
horiz position
vert size
vert position

adjusting these can get rid of the space on top and left..........OR the bottom and
right if need be.

Oh. You mean the h/w controls on the front of the monitor near the on/off switch? But would the not change the default setting.. so i may have to change it again when i am using RedHat or XP.. ??

EDIT: Thanks freakyg, it worked. And it did not afftect RedHat atleast. XP i havn't seen but i guess that setting is also going to remain intact. BTW i had an impression that these things are automatic... I did not have to do this on RedHat. Are there tools available for doing this automatically?
