Changing Lilos Default OS
 

Hi, i love my Mandrake but I use Windows a bit more often. Right now it is default in lilo to start Linux within 9 sec but how do i change that to windows?

if there are any good how to's that would be great.

In the Lilo configuration file, change the linux label on the default= line to the Windows label.

this isn't too hard...
 

I had this question myself but I was able to figure it out. Since you are using Mandrake (I assume 9.1?) when you're in X go to the Configuration->Mandrake Control Center. It will prompt you for the root password.

Once you are in, click on the Boot tab on the top left, that will open a subwindow to the right. Click on the Configure button in the Lilo/grub mode box. This will open a drakboot window, where you can change the bootloader main options. You don't have to do anything with this window if you don't want to. (unless you'd like to use the text-based LILO instead of the graphical one, or want to use grub, or increase the # of seconds before it automatically loads the default, etc.) Otherwise just click OK and it will bring up another drakboot window. This window will have list of all of your entries on your boot menu. I.e. linux, linux non-graphical, fail-safe, whatever window OSes you have, etc.

One of these will have an asterisk by it. That is your default boot. To change to another one such as windows, highlight that item and then click on modify. That will open up another small window for that boot device. Click on the box for Default, and that will now be your default boot device. Then just close everything and reboot it and see if it works.

You can also do this by going to the KDE control center. Go to Configuration->KDE->System->Boot Manager. Again it will prompt you for your root password. Go to the operating systems tab and then you can easily choose your default boot device.

you should edit the /etc/lilo.conf
just like Mathieu told.
after that you must reinstall the loader to the mbr by typing "lilo -v -v"

-v is just using verbose mode. You really only need to run lilo after making the changes.
