cdrtools compilation

Have anyone here tried to compile it? I've always used the version supplied with my current distro, but recently in RH 9 and Kernel upgrade (it coincided) cdrecord freezes my system! Either with an official RH kenel or with a custom built one. So I thought to uninstall cdrecord from the system (the RPM version) and install the new one I just downloaded. But after going through most of the README's I just don't know how to build it (I got quite confussed) So my questin here is what make program did you use, either the supplied Gmake or smake or just make... Anyway I have downloaded the newer version in rpm format from the SF page of xcdroast, just wanted to try and compile it
But if there are binary distributions of it, I should be able to compile it, right, just don't know what make program to use.

Thanks.

PS: BTW is it just me or Joerg really dislikes linux:

Taken from the README.linux file included with the latest source release of cdrtools-2.00.3
/me wonders....

Did you install the compiler? I will check and see if I did. I open an x terminal and command:
Code:
[fancy@uilleann]# gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/2.96/specs
gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-113)
[fancy@uilleann]#
Yes, I have a compiler installed.

I just use the commands (after reading the README and INSTALL files of the source code tarball):

cd /extracted/tarball/directory/location
./configure
make
make install

Make install must be done as root.

Thanks for your extensive reply...
What I meant was if I should use the supplied Gmake program (conviniently may be installed in /usr/bin) or just the usual GNU make program to do the job, because as what Joerg said in the README.linux file there are flaws (bugs?) in the GNU make program and that Gmake should be used.

I would follow the instructions in the README and INSTALL files.

I think my Gentoo just used make as far as I can tell.

Mandrake and Redhat, I just the pre-built rpms and all my burning works great.

Problem is when I upgraded my kernel to the newes (well actually happened from the version before) 2.4.20-18.9 kernel I started with this problems. Even a vanilla custom built 2.4.21 could not fix it. Either I have bad kernels or are the tools which are faulty with the new kernel, so I decided I'd compile... So I'll follow the instructions and will compile with Gmake (a hacked binary of the GNU make).

Thanks for the help!
