cdrom problems after change from 2.4.x to 2.6.x

I've recently compiled a new 2.6.8 kernel on my Debian Sarge distro using apt-get. Now, unfortunately, it appears that my cdrom will not mount in 2.6, but it will still in 2.4. I've found some other threads where they fixed this by changing a line in their grub.conf to ide-cd from ide-scsi because of some weird scsi emulation problem in 2.6.x. Problem is that after installing 2.6 using apt-get I have no idea where to find/change my grub.conf file, or if that doesn't work what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you simply remove the reference to "ide-scsi" in your grub.conf? With kernel 2.6 you don't need to do SCSI emulation anymore.

Yes, that's what i'm trying to do based on what I've seen in other posts, the thing is I don't know where to find edit grub.conf after compiling the 2.6.8 kernel with apt-get. It says that in my original post.

If I remember correctly, grub.conf can be found under /boot/grub.
