I am in the process of switching from windows to Linux. Can someone give me some cd burning programs to try? I have a HP cd writer and would like something that can also convert mp3's to wav. thanks

Linux has a cd burning program called cdrecord, it's a command line program but there are numerous gui frontends to allow point and click burning, have a look at the CD-Writing-HOWTO for setting up the hardware and cdrecord command line burning, and you should have at least one gui already installed with mandrake, look for gcombust, gtoaster or xcdroast in your menu's.

rah rah rah eroaster, comes with mandrake. nicest, most logical, converts mp3's.

eroster, as acid said. X-CD-Roast is another, as is Gnome Toaster. Most/many of the GUI burner programs are just front-ends for cdrecord, though.

Unhappy cd burning

better for u if u stick to Adaptec's Easy Cd Creator, windows application. although i adore linux but the one thing is that: no fast downloaders as DAP; no good ,trustable and fast MP3 encoders like Audio catalyst.
every thing in Linux is ok but for these. i have tried many linux software, but...!!? i wish there are ports for them like www.opera.com did.www.opera.com

if you believe that that's true then you are serisously loosing out on linux. most linux burning software does pretty much all i want. sometimes i will use nero.. but very very occasionally.

and audiogalaxy is a FRONT END for lame and such like anyway. unless of course you are still using the EXTREMELY poor built in encoder.

i use grip to encode to mp3, and it works great with lame / oggenc.

Lightbulb Closer Than You May Think

One answer is closer than you may think. Mandrake includes X-CD Roast, which is a graphical front-end to a couple of other programs (mkisofs and cdrecord). In my experience with both Mandrake and RedHat, it has proven to be fairly stable, and easy to use. As for your need to convert MP3 files to .wav format, I'm not sure if it does that. For more info on this program, take a look at: http://www.xcdroast.org

My vote definitely goes to Eroaster - it is very nice, followed, IMO, by something called CDBakeOven - but that's still very beta and does have a tendency to buggar things up completely, but it looks pretty damn good.

Just to balance things out a bit - I've found XCDRoast to do the job and do it well! As always, the latest version is the best, but that goes for all of them.

Eroaster looks nice, but ......
