CD Burning Problems (RH8.0+SCSI CDRW)
 

Hello, all...
I'm having a bit of a problem. Ever since I upgraded to RH 8.0 I have been completely unable to burn CDs in my Yamaha CRW4416S SCSI CDRW. CDRecord -scanbus sees it just fine, however, when I try to actually BURN something (using the latest and greatest XCdroast + CDRTools direct from the authors' download sites) I get SCSI bus errors and end up rebooting the system so I can do other things.
My hardware is as follows:
Duron 1100, AMD Chipset motherboard, Advansys ABP940U SCSI controller, Yamaha CRW4416S (latest firmware), and IBM DGHS09Y SCSI HDD. The CDRW is terminating the SCSI chain, for what it's worth.
This *did* work previously in RH 7.1. When I upgraded the kernel in RH 7.1 it stopped working, but if I were to reboot and choose the original kernel for RH 7.1 it would work again. I have made sure that the media I'm trying to burn is "high quality" media (whatever that is... typically I try to make sure I'm using brand-name media.) I'm at a loss here. I'm thinking I may have to give up and go with an ATAPI CDRW, but I'd rather not...
Any help would be appreciated! :confused:

Hmmm ... not too familiar with RH's kernels...

But did you consider using a stock-kernel
from http://www.kernel.org and see what it does?

Also, you might want to diff the two RH kernel
source trees for the drivers of your SCSI controller
to see how/why RH patched it to death, and whether
you could use the old source with your newer kernel.

Obviously it's a fault of the newer kernel, so I wouldn't
give up on the good hardware :)

Thanks, Tinkster. I think you're probably right on the money. I've been tempted to try and grab an older version of the CDRecord software and the Advansys drivers and see if there's any difference if I use them instead. OTOH, it *is* only a 4x4x16 CDRW, and for about $50 (CompGeeks) I can get a MUCH faster ATAPI CDRW. :-)

I'd be getting the new drive if I was you.

Hey, everyone... in a desperate attempt to make it work, I downgraded my CDRTOOLS to 1.10-11. It still doesn't work. Here's the output of attempting to burn an audio CD from a bunch of wav files:

So why don't you? Personally I have never had good luck with Redhat kernels and my SCSI equipment. Build your own. If that does not work, then it is worth looking into more.

Hmm... I suppose I could build a new kernel... however I'm tempted to just chuck the SCSI and go with ATAPI. I think one thing I'm gonna try is taking it out and get a friend with Windows XP to see if he can burn using my drive. He's got an identical model in that machine which works for him, so that would be a good test, I think...
