Caught signal 11. _Server aborting

Ok, I'm not entirely sure what's happening, but my original problem was that I installed
KDE and then was no longer able to log into X. I booted up my system this morning
and I found a whole new login screen, different background and all. It was very
exciting!

Now, I have a choice of how I want to log in. There's a catch...I only get to this new
login screen if I reboot. It doesn't work from a regular command prompt. Anyway, my
choices are "default", "twm", "wmaker", "kde2" and "failsafe".

"Default" doesn't work and simply takes me back to the login window.

"TWM" works though it is very limited.

"Wmaker" works fine. All of the KDE tools seem to be properly installed and working
fine. I can't however, log into KDE2.

"failsafe" opens a white window that doesn't seem to want to let me do anything.

When I try running the "startx" command from my "debian:~#" prompt (logged in as
root), this is the error message I get. What does it tell you? What do I need to do?

Here's the error message:

warning: process set to nice value 0 instead of -10 as requested

(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice
No such device.

Try reconfiguring the mouse device part in your XF86Free config.
If you haven't got /dev/input/mice then look up the mouse device from your (if you got it) gpm or mouse config. BTW, watch the error markers in the logfile. Next time, unless someone needs to see the full log, just post from "egrep xfree.log -e "^.(EE|WW)"", makes it easier to read. TIA.

Did you build a new kernel by chance while all this was going on? If not then do you see USB being started in your dmesg?

Did you ever get this one sorted ? I get the same error message trying to start kde2. Strange thing is only 'sort of' configeration I've managed to get to work is kdm as the window manager and then access a gnome-session.

I'm getting to know my way around gnome, but would like to try kde as well
