Caps lock inverted in Linux Mint, won't reboot, encrypt-fs message

I strongly suspect I've been hacked, but just in case it is a bad software update, I'm asking if anyone especially after updating firefox had same issues. I think it is a bit much for someone to 'update' my laptop's home directory and encrypt it [Yes I know I should have, but I save online and do backups] for me and move it to other directories.

At first on booting, I just had Caps lock inversion problem - with caps on it would type lower case, with it off it was upper case. When I rebooted got the dreaded black screen and blinking cursor. Tested mouse and keyboard on live CD boot, and they were ok. My home directory had only

Access-Your-Private-Data.desktop README.txt

Anyone know what is happening?

This LQ thread has some suggestions. It's a couple of years old, but hopefully it will help:

Thanks for replying Frankbell. For a variety of reasons, I decided to zero the drive and reinstall Win 7 and change to Debian. I managed to access my home directory files using a command I have promptly forgotten, and using my logon password to access it. So just backed up my data first then reinstalling when zeroing is finished.

I did not try to encrypt my data but believe I may have updated encryptfs. The blinking caps lock and inversion was also a bit weird. At least I have my recent data!
