HOW can i get rid of this mess? what is the RIGHT way to do it?
The output you posted in your first post shows that rpm did not want to uninstall java-1.4.2-gcj-compat because it was needed by jessie and gnu-crypto. By uninstalling java-1.4.2-gcj-compat as well as the packages that needed it, you eliminate the dependency issues.
i originally tried to remove jessie after getting that message and that failed too, with other dependancy messages. my real confusion was because you used "java-1.4.2-gcj-compat" and i typed out the whole name of the package. is this just because rpm is intelligent enough to know what youre talking about?
For most packages, you do not need to use the version number when doing operations on them using rpm. The kernel is a bit unique in that because you are allowed to have more than one kernel installed at anytime, you need to use the version number.
