Can't send email

I'm using Fedora Core 5, and Evolution mail client.
I can receive email, but cannot send anything via smtp. I called the isp, and the tech said everything appears to be working at their end. I reviewed the setup with him, and he said it looked right. Each time I attempt to send mail, I get a message that says it can't authenticate my password. I tried Thunderbird and got a similar response. Any fixes?

in Thunderbird goto: edit/ account settings/ server settings. under use secure connection put ssl. do NOT check use secure authentication. goto: "outgoing server" click on edit/ click or check on use name and password is correct. Also check tls. This is what I have found to work. I hope it helps.

I tried this fix in Thunderbird and it didn't solve the problem.
I did set up this email address and passwords in an MS Outlook program, and it did work, so that eliminates the potential of a problem with the ISP.
I would really like some help getting evolution to work! HELP!

Have you checked your firewall to see if the settings allow sending?
