Can't open attachments in Thunderbird

I've just updated to Thunderbird 1.5-04. Now when I double click on an email attachment to open it, it won't open. I have to save the file somewhere and then open it. This is becoming really annoying.

Any Ideas anyone??

Thanks in advance

Steve

What exactly does it do when you dbl-click on the attachment?
Does the problem happen for files of different extensions?

What attachments are giving you problems?

I have problems with certain attachments that are described as octet/stream - this happens when some windows users send an attachment, like a doc or xls file. It has something to do with their mail client describing the attachment improperly.

If you have an email account you can send from, send a plain text file to the TB account and see if it opens.

Double click the attachment and nothing happens. Doesn't matter what the file is or what extension it is, it just doesn't open. It worked fine before I upgraded. If it ain't broke don't fix it eh!

The upgrade was obviously a bug add, not a bug fix lol!!!

Make sure TB is not running, rename your mimetypes.rdf to mimetypes.bad (it is in your profile).
Open TB, and try it now...

I'v always had that problem in TB -- I thought it was a feature. I just go to File->Attachments->Open, and the appropriate application is used to open the attachment.

Perhaps it's a setting in the TB profile?

Opening attachments

I am having the same problem with opening attachments in the latest version of Thunderbird email. Attachment that I want to open just before sending will simply not open. It offers to save it if I double click on the attachment file. I have already saved it. I want to read it as I could do in Outlook Express.

Any solutions anyone?

Wow! Did you notice that the last entry in this thread was made in 2007? :)

Anyhow, TB can only open attachments that have some application registered for the attachment's mime type. For example, if (as is suggested by your reference to Microsoft's "Outlook Express") you are attempting to open a "Word" document, you will need a application (e.g., OpenOffice for "Word") installed on your system, and register the mime type for the document.

You can check and modify you mime associations by clicking on Edit->Preferences and selecting the Applications tab.
