Cant install Ubuntu

hey,

I want to run a version of linux on my computer (ubuntu) but cant get the install to work. I get past teh parts where it asks where i am, what language i speak and what keyboard i have,

Then it comes up which "it cant find my cdrom if you are using a weird cdrom dirve then please add drivers" I find this weird because i am running this off the cd. I dont have drivers for the cd. I asked my boss and he seems to think that it might be because i am running a SATA Hd.

Can anyone help

I do not think it is the SATA thing, I have been installing Linux for quite some time, and distro's 2 years ago recognized a SATA drive. What type of CD-ROM is it, also what kind of MoBo and IDE controller are you running? It could be the HD, but if you are using the latest version of Ubuntu I doubt that is it? Have you tried another Disto CD just to see if it has a problem on the HD/CD-ROM?

I had the same issue while i tried installing RH/SuSE/FC in a Toshiba Portege...
The system will boot from the CDROM and installation will begin but the installer cannot read the setup files from the CDROM... i wonder how this is possible cos if the installation can boot and begin from the CDROM then why not read the setup files and continue... i cudnt find a solution but found a workarround... u can dump the setup files in a local harddrive or a external USB device and when installer prompts for location of setup files, u can point it to any of these... it worked for me!

Do you overclock your system? if so run it at default. Did you burn the ISO at maximum speed on a cheap CD/DVD? burn it at half speed. Maybe your HD is old and dying? Can you install any win versions or linux distros at all?

Can someone help me?

Hi,

I have just downloaded the .iso from Ubuntu. But there are a few querries unresolved:

1. What is Mdk5, and what is the relevance for checking it? Further, how do we check it?
2. On rebooting the system with the installer CD in CD drive, the system boots up with WinXP, without going to the 'default' linux installation mode(even when the boot path is set to CD drive). How to install in such a scenario?

Pls advise.
Thanks.
