Can't initialize OpenGL?

Ok, so I like to play Doom 3, my Windows side won't play it becasue I have 2003 (and it wants XP/2000) so I figured that I'd download the proper Linux files from the ID ftp server, But when I try to run doom3 with the command "doom3" it comes up with the error "Can't initialize OpenGL" I thought that OpenGL was a standard and was no specific file per say, what am I missing?

What are these 'proper linux files?' What sort of machine? Which Linux OS are you using? Are you using Wine? VMware?
What video card/graphics device are we talking here, and have you got the necessary driver/kernel module(s) for it?

Duh, I forgot the important stuff :P, the Doom SDK files and the Doom executable itself (doom3-linux-1.3.1.1304-sdk.x86.run and doom3-linux-1.3.1.1304.x86.run), this is a Slack 11 running XFCE4, no, this is straight-up linux, 100% native. Radeon 9600SE, and I beilive that I am using the right drivers. Kernal 2.6.18.

OK, so have you got The ATI proprietary drivers from ATI, or are you using the ones that came with Slackware -- basically, have you got 3D acceleration/rendering? This might me as simple as configuring the xorg.conf file (which maybe you should post, as well as any other information from near where the error occurs, so we can see what's going on when it happens). In a console, what do you get if you type glxinfo | grep direct ? It should say something like 'Direct Rendering: Yes'..
So, have you been able to run other software/games similar to Doom3 graphics-wise? Or is this the only thing like it that you have tried -- what I'm asking is if this problem is 'Doom-specific' or if maybe it affects other programs too.
You might search the web for other forums too, like ones that Specifically cater to games like Quake, Doom, WoW on Linux; Also if there are support forums on the ATI site; I don't play games so I haven't got a link handy for you, but I have seen the forums on the net - they're there somewhere
I hope this atleast gets you started in the right direction. Also, Search LQ (if you haven't) for terms or tags like 'Doom' 'doom3' 'ATI and doom3' 'Doom3 and Radeon' and see what other users may have experienced like this.

And here's a simple idea, from this link: Set your display for 24 bit color, and try that. I have discovered on my own system that a lot of 3D goodies like even GL screensavers will not work in 16bit color.

I thank you GrapefruiTgirl, I have gotten it to work a little more now :P Yes, i needed the ATI drivers and I can render in 3D, but I have a new problem that I'll post where it belongs, in the game section.
