Can't Edit Crontab

I am attempting to edit roots crontab and comment out a job that doesn't need to run anymore. I use crontab -e to edit the file. However, when I save the file it looks to save normally but when I run crontab -e again the changes are gone. I've never seen this before and I am highly confused.

Anyone else run into this an have a hint on where to look for a fix?

Thanks,

Yes, this is very weird.

Have you tried checking the permissions on these files?

/var/spool/cron/crontabs
/var/spool/cron/crontabs/root
