Sorry, your DVD is broken, there is little you can do about it except clean it and try again or buy some of these DVD repair toolkit.

Sometimes tools like dd_descue help by repeatedly reading the same place (also their seeks slow down the drive, which also helps sometimes). Also, some slower readers of a few year's age may be better at reading disks with medium damage. But generally yes, physical damage to disk does happen and it often means completely lost sectors.

Using Brasero works just fine though, I don't understand why this wouldn't work.

I don't think you need the "count"---ie dd will just go until there is no more data in the input file.

Try it several times---if it always stops in the same place, then it is probably a bad DVD. If it does something **different** each time, then the DVD reader is suspect. Try cleaning the reader and/or try the disk in a different reader.
