cant access system

I tried to install kino and somehow this uninstalled KDE. I then installed the K-Mail and now when I boot the system the display manager now displays all the entries in the /etc/passwd file as users! (e.g adm). When I try to login as root or my original user the DM screen is redisplayed and I am back where I started ?.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this...
