Cannot Save in GIMP
Hi from newbie. Have always used Photoshop but have been trying to use Gimp. All is well until I try to save an image - especially in a different location. I get 2 error messages. I do change suffix to a Gimp approved first.Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks

hi there and welcome to lq,
can you post the error messages? which version of gimp are you using? which distro? regards, slackie1000 |
Gimp
Hi Slackie, Thanks for fast response. It is Gimp 2.0.5 in Fedora. One error msg says: Could not open 'file.xcf' for writing. Permission denied. The 2nd one says: Saving 'file.xcf' failed. Plug-in could not save image. Hope you can help. tedphoto

hi there,
you have a permission problem. this is not gimp related. your user is not allowed to write in the directory that you are trying. check the permissions. regards, slackie1000 |
Hi again - as a newbie to Linux, have been unable to get into permissions to change it, although I've changed access in the file properties. I spent some time going through everything in sight. Is there an easy answer. I only want to save a jpg into another folder. Thanks again.

GIMP again
Hi, as a postscript to above - I have no problem saving files from Open Office, so wonder why it is only Gimp giving me a headache? Does anyone out there use Gimp? If aso would love to hear from you on this.

from a terminal:
chown -R yourusername: picturedirectory chmod -R 0644 picturedirectory Now all the pictures will have the correct permissions for you to change the file and write it back to picturedirectory. |
Thanks Awsome - no luck so far. I even made a folder "picturedirectory" but it won't recognise it or others. I'm using a Pendrive to try and open from and also save back to. Opening is ok it's the saving where I'm stuck.

i find many progrtams wont save to a pendrive well, especially if your distro recognises them under the media: protocoll,
try saving to your home folder then moving them using yoru file manager (Normally konqueror ore nathilus (sp?)) |
Save the files to a HDD and copy them to the pen drive when you are done.

Thanks dasy2k1 & Awsome - Have just had about 80% success - saving to Home, then unable to save direct to Pen, so Using File browser (No Konqueror) did cut & paste. Now I am on one road, if not the best road. I also may need update for Gimp.;) Thanks again

Gimp Better
Just a final update - Downloaded version 2.2.11 of Gimp, and found it much better to use. Much easier to make changes and save in any location. The other version was included with Fedora. regards to all Tedphoto
