cannot play encrypted dvds with any player

I've just set up a new desktop box with Debian Squeeze. I have Dragonplayer, Kaffeine, and VLC installed. I've got libdvdcss2 and w64codecs. however when I try to play encrypted DVDs I get errors with all three players. Here's the log from the last attempt with VLC:

It reads unencrypted DVDs just fine. Any suggestions?

The message "Read of scrambled sector without authentication" indicates that dvdcss is not properly installed where the players expect it to be (/usr/lib on 32-bit systems, or /usr/lib64 on 64-bit systems).

Okay, this is interesting. I used "locate libdvd" and found a ton of stuff in /usr/lib, /usr/share/doc, and /usr/share/bug. but not libdvdcss2. In fact i tried "locate libdvdcss2" and it turned up nothing; it's nowhere to be found on the system. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling; same result. I ran the same command on my Squeeze laptop and found the file in the appropriate place. What's going on?

This is what you are looking for:

Code:

$ ls -l /usr/lib64/libdvdcss.so*
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root    18 2009-04-18 17:39 /usr/lib64/libdvdcss.so.2 -> libdvdcss.so.2.1.0
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 35688 2008-11-23 12:03 /usr/lib64/libdvdcss.so.2.1.0

Funny... I uninstalled and reinstalled for the third time and this time it worked. I have no idea what happened or what fixed it, but it's working now. This new computer's turning out to be a pain... probably because I'm mixing a brand-new motherboard and cpu with a bunch of random parts that can still remember the Clinton administration.
