cannot make a samba pdc

hi ,
I want to configure a samba PDC and I cannot make it.
smb.conf looks like this
[global]

netbios name = pdc
workgroup = domain
server string = nume_dom_paj

security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd

unix password sync = yes
passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
passwd chat = *New*UNIX*Password* %n\n
*Retype*New*UNIX*Password* %n\n
*passwd:*done*

preferred master = yes
domain master = yes
local master = yes

os level = 64

domain logons = yes

[NETLOGON]

path =/usr/local/samba/netlogon
writeable = no
write list = pi

[profiles]

path = /export/smb/ntprofile
writeable = yes
create mask = 0600
directory mask = 0700

I added a user named "x$" in passwd and with "smbpasswd -a -e -m -s x$" I added the user in smb's passwd file . I added te user a password with "smbpasswd x$". When I want to join a pc with win xp pro in the domain, from system properties -> computername -> domain", I have selected the radio button "domain" and I added the domain name. a window apear and it wans asking for username and password. in the username field I typed "x$" and in the password field, the password.
after a moment i have an error message: "the following error occurred attempting to join the domain "domain": access is denied"

what is the cause of the problem ?

thankyou!

Have you tried adding the machine to the domain as root? I had a problem similar to that, but when I added the machine as root, it worked fine. Also, I had a problem with when I would logon, it would work fine, but after a reboot of the client machine, it wouldn't work. I think I had to make the user's profile a local one in XP. It's under the properties of My Computer, Advanced tab, and the Settings button under User Profiles section. You might not run into this problem, but if you do, there you go.
