cannot login to kdm as non-root
Hi,
I have checked thro' the archive and found a couple of similar questions but no answer. That was sometimes ago. More knowledge should have been acquired by more people by now. So I will pose the question again. I am using Debian Etch, kenrel 2.6.15 and kde3.5. After the last apt-get upgrade, I cannot login to kdm as non-root. After a while, it loops back to the login screen. Hope I will have better luck than those previous questioners on this topic. wkwireless |
Did you tried to login in a console, then making startx? If it failed, what message did it send.

When I login via console and run startx, I get the following:
xauth: creating new authority file ... Fatal server error: server is already active on display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again Hope this helps. wkwireless |
try running
startx -- :1 insted of just startx |
First, check, is there any user except the root.
Then, in Etch, x-server starts from the second level, and system boots in second level by default. Try to remove x-server startup links from /etc/rc.2 to /etc/rc.4 directories, reboot, then make startx. |
