i have tried many a times to install VLC media player from yum, rpm etc, but whenevr i try unsolved dependencies arise saying "libx264.so.56 required by package vlc-core and ffmpeg". i have searched for the libx264.so.56 and found rpm at rpmfind and rpm.pbone.net, but when i install them dependencies are not resolved saying package
"libx264.so.54 required by package mplayer". please help me with this problem if u can.. in great anticipation of your replies.

it is most likely there but befor you do any thing go to your /usr/X11/lib and you might see it this way.libX264.so.----- but the program calls for it this way libx264.so. notice the capital X. Well I found this problem fix at Xorg.org. and it is a typo problem you can make a symlink or copy it and rename it so it loads that X or x lib. hope this helped . I spent a few hours on a lot of programs that the programmers seem to miss the shift key. But I cant blame all of it on them either some of it is Xorg problem to. with the shift key good luck.
