Cannot install Freeamp

I cannot install Freeamp (I am a newbie using Suse 6.4 Eval and KDE).
It came with my distro, but it is not installed in the KDE menus, and its binary in /usr/... wont run.
I downloaded a new version of it from the net, but it wont compile, it complains of missing Gtk and Gdk, instead.
Gdk and Gdk are not missing at all: version 1.2.7 came and was installed with my distro. (I also tried to download, compile and install Glib and Gtk version 1.2.10, but it did not help).
After two days of fruitless efforts I no longer insist on installation of a program that is not ready for that.
So, could you please help me to find an other mp3 player that is really simple to install even on Linux?

To compile software you need development libraries as well as the working libraries.

i.e.

gtk-1.2.10-ximian.9.i386.rpm
AND
gtk-devel-1.2.10-0.i386.rpm

(the version numbers are just an example)

Downloading Xmms

I am downloading Xmms, as I wonder if I can install it from source.
In the meantime I installed an ancient version of XAudio. Its sound quality is often terrible and some of its windows tend to freeze, but it is better than nothing.
I also found some exiting rpms for SuSE, but I do not know how to install software from rpms. Either I copied them to my HDD or I tried to use them directly from the CD, yast always told me 'not existing directory'.
