Cannot install either xine or ogle on RH9

I am getting tired of trying.... I went all over the place to find proper versions of xine or ogle. What happened were the following:

1. If I tried to compile and install xine, the scripting on my monitor looks ok (not many errors or something like that). After I have done with ./install. I typed "xine", I got the message saying the command "xine" was not found.

2. Then, I tried RPM's to try both xine and ogle. Both ways behaved the same: There came a dialog window saying it is preparing to install the package and suddenly it goes away and nothing happened aftewards.

I ended up giving up and switch to Mandrake 9.2RC, but it has problems of its own. I am thinking going back to either RH8 or RH9.

Can anyone tell me how to get around this problem?

XavierP 09-09-2003 08:24 AM

Try apt-get. It will download the package, resolve any dependencies and install it.

Amos Ku 09-09-2003 08:31 AM

Sorry, I am newbie here... What is "apt-get"? and what do those info to do with my problem?

XavierP 09-09-2003 08:47 AM

Reading the INSTALL document:

cd to the directory where your unzipped Xine is
type ./configure hit enter
type make hit enter
type su hit enter
type in root password hit enter
type in make install hit enter

On the Xine website there are a number of frontends and plugins for Xine.

Apt-get is a port of Debian's apt-get for RedHat - just by typing apt-get install xine it would do all for you.

For Ogle, download the individual components and install them. There are good instructions on the Ogle website. As a quick reference, here are the instructions you will have to run on each file:

tar xfvz <filename>
cd <folder created>
./configure
make install

Ogle has worked very well for me. Good luck.

Amos, I think you can solve that problem you have with the RPMS by installing them through the command terminal; open a new terminal, change to the directory where you have the rpms stored and type rpm -if --allfiles [rpm filename]

at least that's how it works for me. Most packages that I try to install through the graphic environment usually just present that little dialog box that says it's preparing to install and then it just disappears and nothing happens... So I just usually install my packages through the terminal. Don't take my word for it though since I've only been using Linux for 2 weeks.

I installed Ogle on my desktop with RH9 and it worked out fine.
I've been trying to install it on my laptop for 2 days now and I still cannot figure out what is wrong. When I try to install it with ./configure,
it says it cannot find this dependent library called libXext. So I tried to find it by myself, so I typed locate libXext... and it finds /usr/X11R6/libXext.so.6
Now, I'm no expert, isn't that the file Ogle was looking for?
It also doesn't find a file called XShm.h
Package dependencies piss me the **** off.

I am trying to install Ogle and I just don't understand where the folder I need to cd to in order to ./configure?
I unzip the tar file and this is what I get

XavierP 11-29-2003 07:50 AM

what does /usr/doc/ogle_gui-0.9.1/README say?

bgriesi 11-29-2003 08:26 AM

Actually /usr/doc/ogle_gui-0.9.1/README is blank?
But this one is not usr/doc/ogle-0.9.1/README
Playing a DVD

To play a dvd you start ogle.
A simple player is included in the Ogle main package to start this do.
'ogle -u cli /dev/dvd' just 'ogle' will do to.
where you can change /dev/dvd to point to your dvd reader or a directory
containing the files of a dvd. (see ogle_gui examples below)

Ogle GUI
If you install the ogle_gui package you will also have access to a
graphical user interface
You start the GUI with 'ogle' _not_ ogle_gui.
In the menu of ogle_gui which will pop up you choose open and
type the device name of your dvd drive
/dev/hdc or wherever it is on your system

or the path to a copy of the dvd on your hard drive
/usr/dvdcopy/VIDEO_TS

or the path to the mounted dvd
/mnt/dvd or /mnt/dvd/VIDEO_TS

or choose open disc in the menu
which will open /dev/dvd which should point to your dvd device.

At the moment you have to exit ogle and restart to play another dvd.

Solaris
If you have a FFB2 frame buffer (a Creator 3D) then you can use it
hardware yuv2rgb to gain faster playback speed. This is still
exprimental code be warned. Enable it by setting the environment
variable USE_FFB2_YUV2RGB.

For more information please read the man page 'man ogle' and 'man oglerc'
or visit http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~dvd/
Nothing really about how to configure it? I am at a lose on this one.

XavierP 11-29-2003 10:22 AM

Try issuing './install' - that should install the software.

bgriesi 11-29-2003 11:14 AM

Okay ./install where do I do this at??? what directory?

XavierP 11-29-2003 11:18 AM

In a terminal, cd to whichever directory has the 'install' file, use su to become root and type './install'.

bgriesi 11-29-2003 01:22 PM

Please forgive me if I sound angry here but that is what I was looking for in the first place is the directory that the install or config file was? that is what I can not seem to find and I was hoping someone on here knew where I could find it? when i type locate ogle the only place it shows it it in my home folder where I downloaded it to and in the /app/share/kde/kappfinder ? I am so puzzled by this and ogle's website has nothing on where there own software even loads in the computer at least you would think they could tell you this? I am sorry but this is becoming a big head ache.

XavierP 11-29-2003 01:25 PM

Do you have a directory in your home folder called Ogle? and if you don't know where it expanded to, how did you find the readme?

bgriesi 11-29-2003 04:49 PM

Well when I did this tar xvzf ogle-0.9.1-i586-1.tgz.gz
I got a /usr folder and a install folder in my home folder in the usr folder there are 6 sub folders bin, doc, include, lib, man and share. in the Install folder I have a slack-desc and a doinst.sh thing?

When I open the "doinst.sh it reads this
( cd usr/lib/ogle ; rm -rf libmsgevents.so.6 )
( cd usr/lib/ogle ; ln -sf libmsgevents.so.6.1.0 libmsgevents.so.6 )
( cd usr/lib/ogle ; rm -rf libdvdcontrol.so.9 )
( cd usr/lib/ogle ; ln -sf libdvdcontrol.so.9.1.0 libdvdcontrol.so.9 )
( cd usr/lib/ogle ; rm -rf libmsgevents.so )
( cd usr/lib/ogle ; ln -sf libmsgevents.so.6.1.0 libmsgevents.so )
( cd usr/lib/ogle ; rm -rf libdvdcontrol.so )
( cd usr/lib/ogle ; ln -sf libdvdcontrol.so.9.1.0 libdvdcontrol.so )

When I open the slack-desc one I get this
# HOW TO EDIT THIS FILE:

I have gone through all these other folders and tried to do a ./install or ./configure. I feel real dumb here now. I appreciate your help though. Am I over looking something here?
