Cann't toogle MC panel

Hello. First, sorry if my english isn't good enought, it's not my native language. Anyway, I have a little problem with MC under Slackware 9.0:

I cann't toogle MC panel (Ctrl +O) under user. In console error appeares:
"Not an Xterm or Linux console". Under X (in Xterm) I can toogle MC, but cann't see the shell "$", like MC is steel runing in background. I have added "user" to /etc/groups in default group: console and tty (By the way, where is it possible to learn about default groups and their permissions?) but it didn't help much. Under root everything goes OK.

Any help is wellcome. Hope my english is understandable.
