Can you send mail simply by clicking on the email address in the web browser?

For anyone who used Windows, if you see an email address link on a web browser, you can click on it and it will open up Outlook with the email already in the "to" area.

Using MandrivaLinux 2006, when I click on the link, it doesn't do anything. It doesn't show any error, doesn't pop uo kontact/kmail. It just doesn't do anything.
Can I simply click on the link and get kontact/kmail to pop up with the address in the "to" section?

Probably you have to configure your browser to cooperate with an email client. As you can choose from a variety of browsers and email clients in linux you cannot expect it to open MS-Outlook automatically...

But I ve never made that so i'm not sure...

It depends on:

1. What email client you're using
2. What web browser you're using
3. How your web browser is set up

BTW the same applies to all operating systems.

I don't want this linux system to open up MS outlook. I only stated that while on windows, using IE5, it opens up outlook.
As for linux, nothing happens.

I am using mozilla-firefox, and kontact/kmail.

Type about:config in browser address bar and look for this setting: network.protocol-handler.app.mailto

Double click on it and set it to the location of your email client. You may need to put extra settings in to get it to work with kmail but I dont know what they are offhand

You can view the available command-line options with "kmail --help".

However, if Mandriva includes it, it's better to just give "kmailservice" instead of "kmail" as the mail program. This will allow KMail to work with the "send link" function, embedded mail subjects, etc., without doing any extra work.

thanks, that link described it pretty well. I didn't even know about "about:config" so thanks on that as well.
It seems to work nice.
This isn't really a problem, because who emails themselves, but I wanted to test it out. in a web site, i clicked on the email link, saw the compose pop up. I entered my own email address in there.
then when I opened kmail, I saw some welcome to kontact screen I never saw before, and my kmail layout was a little screwed up.
otherwise, sending it to other people, then opening it up works well with no screw up.
this really isnt an issue, being who would email themselves, but I find it odd that it would do that.
