Help!! ..X quit ( post #1)

hi people..I'm running Rh9.0 on my Dell laptop...(gnome desktop)
this morn, suddenly the desktop quit, went to text login and was back to the graphical login screen again, all within 4..5 seconds..
no idea what might have caused that??!!..

Is it possible the ISP had some glitch in their signal for a brief period...

btw, checked the system log:....

gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0

gdm[3110]: gdm_child_action: Master rebooting...

then I rebooted the machine..

shutdown: shutting down for system reboot

any advice please?....."End Quote

the system log in further detail...
Jun 11 18:00:40 dhcp-523-062 gconfd (mike-3226): Received signal 15,
shutting down cleanly
Jun 11 18:00:40 dhcp-523-062 gdm(pam_unix)[3156]: session closed for user mike
Jun 11 18:00:40 dhcp-523-062 gconfd (mike-3226): Exiting
Jun 11 18:00:40 dhcp-523-062 gdm[3156]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: FatalX error - Restarting :0
Jun 11 18:00:54 dhcp-523-062 gdm(pam_unix)[3357]: authentication failure;
logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser=gdm rhost=localhost user=mike
Jun 11 18:00:56 dhcp-523-062 gdm-binary[3357]: Couldn't authenticate user

Because you mention that this is a laptop, I would be squarely suspicious of your "Advanced Power Management". Perhaps you can turn off Advanced Power Management in your BIOS? This may help.

Yeah most likely an APM issue ... like it shut down your monitor to save battery power, and killed X in the process. Look at the APM configuration in your BIOS and in the kernel ...

easiest way to check is if it happens after the defined idle period, say the computer is idle for 3 minutes, the screen blanks, and when you wake it up again, X is gone ...

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum or same forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/rules.php

Next time just add on to your existing thread instead of starting a new one. This one is considered double posting. Also use better and more helpful thread titles in the future please. Yours does in no way describe your actual problem.

You would get lots more success with your questions if you will read and follow this guide as well:

How to ask questions about Linux

Look at the subject you posted for example.
