Can SAMBA DHCP

All of the tutorials for using Samba to Windows and Linux only show using a Static ip address. Is there a way to use DHCP to set up Samba?

Samba doesn't provide DHCP itself. You need a separate DHCP server on your network to get an IP from.

I use Samba frequently...what's the specific issue you're having troubles with? I might be able to help.

No specific issue at this time since I have only been doing the examples. All of the examples tell you to use a static ip for your NIC card. And Verify that the /etc/hosts file contains the following entry: 192.168.1.1 server which which is a static ip. Here is another: On all Windows clients, set the WINS Server address to 192.168.1.1, the IP address of the server.

I have not seen any where, where you can use DHCP for any setting. Right now on my network I use DHCP for everything. So in looking at all of the examples I would need to change to static. Do you use DHCP?

The problem is that windows doesn't use name-services
or dhcp for this purpose itself, but relies on WINS
(and AD, if you set it up like that) to guarantee that
functionality.

I see your point about the WINS server. I guess you would have to make at least the SAMBA server static, yes. I typically just set up the Linux side of the house so I'm not 100% sure what settings are put in place on the clients, but our server are assigned static IPs so we've never had this question before.
