Can I use my mobile phone to gain internet access?
 

I'm using Mepis 6.0. Now, I've done this before in WIndows and I can connect by using the GPRS connection of my phone to the internet. I can even do this using a bluetooth adaptor. Now, is this possible in Mepis? I mean I have a bluetooth adaptor but it seems it only connects when you are sending file. How will I be able to maximize my connectivity?

That doesn't look very distro-specific and most should apply across the board. Linux can do everything Windows can with Bluetooth and more, there just aren't many purty GUI apps that do it for you but the CLI apps are insanely powerful and fun to play with if you have the time and/or inclination :)

I tried the link below. However, I can't seem to make it work on my phone. At the minicom terminal, I typed in everything that was written. I noticed that my phone had a "G" sign which means GPRS but I can't ping www.yahoo.com. Nor could I browse to any websites.

How do you NORMALLY connect, using DHCP? In that case you probably just
need to find a DNS server and add it to /etc/resolv.conf ...

I've never actually used GPRS for my computer as the telcos charge formidable rates for that service and I'm not keen. What I understand from that howto is if you get a GPRS connection (which you are) then you've had a win and you need to create a proper connection using wvdial or another program of that nature. Creating the GPRS link in a minicom session won't let you access a network from linux as there isn't an interface in the routing table for it to use. wvdial will create ppp0 and then you'll be away :)

I have to connect a wire between my cell phone and USB port to do it. It emulates an external modem connected via serial port I think.
