Can I play an MP3 at different speeds?

Hi,

I want to listen to MP3s at a slower speed. I'm listening to lectures from John Hopkins School of Public Health's OpenCourseWare and the first lecture (in 3 parts) plays at what appears to be double speed.

I tried letting the school know the problem, via the contact form on the site where the lecture file is, but the message bounced.

Is there software that will play MP3s at variable speed, so I can slow it down and hopefully understand what is being said?

VLC plays at various speeds, but only puts out audio when playing at normal speed, unless there's a way of getting around that...?

I'm using Ubuntu.

Thanks

Try opening the file with Audacity, and using the "Change Speed" effect.

alsaplayer has a speed control. You can even play things backwards. It's the control above the volume slider.

Another related thing... If you have something which is the correct pitch, but you want to get through it faster or slow it down, you can change the speed without affecting the pitch with "wsola".

You'll need to convert to wav format first, and then convert back if you want to listen to it on a device which only accepts mp3 or whatever...

It's pretty CPU intensive to convert something. I don't know if there's something which does this on the fly - perhaps there is a plugin for xmms.
