can I have a 64bit snd a 32bit package installed

My AVG virus scanner (not availble in 64bit) requires a 32bit version of libexpat1but becauseam running sarge 64bit other 64bit packages want 64bit. Cant I have both 32 and 64 bit versions to satisfy all of them

The 32bit and 64bit libraries have different directories so it shouldn't be a problem

how do I stop one from replacing the other cos dpkg does it automatically.
