Can I get "ordinary" scrollbars, as Cygwin X server can't display the default ones?
 

I have an ubuntu 12.0.4 desktop. I have a Win7 laptop running Cygwin. I can display windows from the Ubuntu box on the Win7 laptop using the Cygwin X server, but the window is somewhat "degraded". Specifically, scrollbars are not rendering properly. I've used Ubuntu before, but this is the first time I've seen these scrollbar popups that are used in 12.04. I'm guessing the Cygwin X server is having trouble rendering that for some reason. In the Cygwin view, I see the slightly thicker vertical bar, but when I hover the mouse over it, nothing happens.

I'd really prefer to get conventional scrollbars. Can I configure Ubuntu 12.0.4 to do this, which might result in Cygwin being able to display them?

Are you setting -sb and other scroll related options when opening the terminal? What terminal type are you opening?

Typing "man xterm" you should see various options appropriate for xterm including -sb. Many of these options are common to various terminal emulators and other X windows applications.

Well, my main concern is not with a terminal window, it's for Eclipse. I don't see any options on the Ubuntu Eclipse command line for controlling scrollbars. I'm also using "gnome-terminal" for terminal windows, and I don't see anything there for controlling scrollbars.

As I said some of these options are common to multiple X utilities even if not specified. In the old days on UNIX there was a "man X" you could view to see common options. That doesn't exist on Linux but it may be the options are available anyway. Perhaps reviewing the xterm man page and trying the options with your elipse start or your gnome-terminal start would work? I see the man page for gnome-terminal even mentions compatibility with xterm.

I tried two different options documented on the "xterm" man page, being "-sb" and "-leftbar", and it said it didn't recognize them.

I haven't yet explored setting X11 resources for the window. I'll have to figure out what resources are available.
