yahoo.com offers POP3 access for a fee. I think hotmail does not.

They are web bassed email services, and you need POP3 access to download your email with ANY email client on ANY plataform. (there are other protocols like IMAP but they are even less likely to be offered to you by a web-based free email services)

[edit]

And in order to send mail you are going to need SMTP service wich I don't think any of them offer not even for a fee. But I might be wrong, you need to research with you mail service provider.

There're few projects at sourceforge.net which promises to be able to download messages from accounts like hotmail (among others) and use Evolution or any other pop3/smtp e-mail client. I've always been curious about installing them, but I never got the time for it:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/bhttpmail/

http://sourceforge.net/projects/hotpop3/

http://sourceforge.net/projects/hotwayd/

if any of these works, please, lemme know :D

Good luck!

you can get thunderbird, mozilla and evolution in fact any pop3 email client to send and recieve through hotmail,

ensure you have contrib and plf on software manager and then install hotwayd and hotwayd smtp, then when setting up your account you use your email address when it asks for usernasme and log on name, and the pop and smtp adresses are both 127.0.0.1 (110 for pop and 2500 for smtp)

any worries give me a nod back.
