Unhappy Can't play MP3's

I have network in my home between an xp machine and my red hat 9 machine. I can view the files and access them all. I have a collection of mp3's that I ripped from CD's on my xp machine that I can access over the network, but when I try to play MP3's Red Hat tells me that this feature has been disabled, how do I fix this?

I am trying to run the RPM now and it wont respond xmms keeps giving me a dialog box labeled "load files". It gives me a list of files in my home directory to of which are mp3 files and when I click on them they don't play at all. And when I click play the same dialog box appears.

How are you trying to run the rpm? You should have downloaded the file which is called "xmms-mp3...." the exact link you can get it from is http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrp...p.fr1.i386.rpm

Then install the plugin by (as root or super user) rpm -ivh /whatever/path/xmms-mp3*rpm

This should show you an installation bar (hash marks) and drop you back to the prompt when it is finished.

You should then simply be able to open xmms and play an mp3. Or double click on the mp3 to play it. That's all I did anyway.

The RPM is in my home directory. It is an icon depicting a box that says RPM. I just click on it and it gives me a root password promt, which I type in and it accepts. Then the HD runs for about a second and nothing more happens. There was no status bar or any indication of an install. What am I doing wrong. After I do all of this I click on an MP3 file and it opens xmms, but doesn't play anything I hit the button that looks like this >, I assume that that is the play button, and it opens up a dialog box titled, "Load File". It gives me choices of files from my home directory, two of which are MP3 files, I try to click on one of them and it doesn't play, there is no error message or anything it just simply doesn't play.

I used the link you placed on this thread. I downloaded the file and ran it. It asked for a password again and I gave it what it wanted. It opened a dialog box and a progress bar appeared. I assume that it installed. When I click on an MP3 file it still opens up xmms and does absolutely nothing. There is no error message it just wont play. It opens up a dialog box that is titled, "Load File". I click on the MP3 file and it still does nothing. If there is no fix for this is there another MP3 program I can download an RPM for?

My fix was to just reinstall xmms - works like a charm now.

RH included a "legal" [renamed] version of xmms that is copyright friendly.

They prolly should have just left it alone altogether and setup instructions on how to get xmms etc.
