Can't load the kernel module 'nvidia.o'.

Hello all,

I am currently trying to install the nVidia driver for the new graphics card that I bought, and I have been unsuccessful so far. I am running RedHat 9.0 and when I attempt to install I change the run-level to 3 so that the X-server does not load. To start, here is the error log that is generated when installing the drivers fails:

nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'

./usr/src/nv/precompiled/nv-linux.o-1.0-5336.rh9up_2.4.20-8_athlon.
executing: 'cd ./usr/src/nv; /usr/bin/ld -d -r -o nvidia.o precompiled-nv-li
nux.o nv-kernel.o'...
-> Kernel module linked successfully.
ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.o'. This is most likely
because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files.
Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your
kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the
'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source
files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the
'--kernel-source-path' commandline option.
-> Kernel module load error: Warning: loading ./usr/src/nv/nvidia.o will taint

#export-tainted for information about tainted
modules
./usr/src/nv/nvidia.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at

Now I did some searching, and I thought that the problem was that my kernel rpm and kernel-source rpm did not match, so I checked to see with:

shane# uname -r
2.4.20-8

and

shane# rpm -q kernel kernel-source
kernel-2.4.20-8
kernel-source-2.4.20-8

Clearly they do match. So now I am stumped and would really appreciate any help provided. Thanks,

Shane

Uh, your kernel source path should be something like

/usr/src/linux<version>

If only it were that easy! /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/build has a symbolic link to /usr/src/linux... so that shouldn't be the problem. Any other suggestions?
