When I install things ( I am running Mandrake 9.1) ( This same problem happens with a few programs)
The configure and make steps go fine, but in the "make install" stage i get a problem. here is the info the kernel puts out while make installing :

How do I change the permissions so it can make that file? I have only had mandrake for 2 days and before that i was on windows.

Any help would be apprecated.

try to su to root and then do make install like this:

Thanks , that's installed now.. I just found anouther console program that asked me for my root password at the start....

This is completely unrelated to this 7 year old thread.

Ubuntu, by default, does not allow su ing to the root user, use sudo instead.

Ubuntu doesn't (by default) use su; the root account is locked. Instead, it uses sudo. Type 'sudo' and then your command (so in this case 'sudo make install'), and if prompted for a password simply enter your USER password.
