can't find much gnucash help

Trying to find an alternative to Quicken.
Trying to use gnucash, but can not figure out how to backup and restore.

the help files say:

2.8.1. Backup file (.xac)

Each time you save your data file, a backup copy will also be
saved with the extension xac. This backup file is a complete copy of
your previous data file, and the filename format refers to the data
file, year, month, day and time of the backup. For example, the filename
gcashdata.20060414185747.xac indicates this is a
backup copy of the file gcashdata saved in the year 2006, April 14, at
6:57:47 p.m.

To restore an old backup file, simply open the .xac file with the
date to which you wish to return. Be sure and save this file with a
different file name, do not use a .xac extension for you regular file
name.

There is no .xac file to be found. There is a gzip file, but I can not open it no matter how hard I try.

Is there a way to backup (and restore) gnucash?

I have searched and searched, and all I find is what I pasted above.

Thank You

Weird. My gnucash setup just dumps .xac files into the same directory as my gnucash file... And it does it every time I save a change, so I have to clean it up periodically (it's a bit annoying really).
