Can't access physical disk in virtualbox in Ubuntu 12.04

I have virtualbox 4.2.12 installed in Ubuntu 12.04 and I have a hard drive with an os that I can't loose however I am having trouble attempting to boot it. I have checked the virtualbox manual and it didn't help. The drive is a physical SATA 160Gb disk and I can access normally through colders and such but I need to boot it from virtualbox. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Where exactly are you running into problems? Is it when you try to set the boot device in Virtual Box, or is it when the vm is actually trying to boot from the hard drive?

Cheers,

I can't find a way to make the drive accessible to boot from, I would like to boot from it but VB only accepts files not folders.
