Can't use Mandrake Update in MDK 9.1

I just installed MDK 9.1 on my Dell PC. It's dual booted with Windows XP Home.

When I try to use the update feature in Control Center, it tells me that mirrors couldn't be found probably because the architecture of my processor is not supported.

How do I get around this? I installed MDK 10.1 but had more trouble with it i.e. : sound card crashes; no modem; screen resolution that was just crazy, etc. I'd like to stay with 9.1 but I'd also like to be able to update it.

I suspect the website that Control Center gets the list of mirrors from has been taken down in the move from Mandrake to Mandriva.

You could use urpmi for updates - see http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ but keep in mind that 9.1 is old and will be moved from 'official' to 'old' on the mirrors sometime soon and will no longer have updates.

Have you tried Mandriva LE 2005?

I tried using urpmi and it gave me the same answer about not being able to find mirrors. I don't know if I put the architecture in right. How do I find that? I haven't tried LE2005 yet. I have a dial up so I can't download the iso's. Where can I find it to buy? Thanks.

In that case I suggest you remove the remote sources using the GUI tool or
Code:
urpmi.removemedia updates
urpmi.removemedia main
urpmi.removemedia contrib
urpmi.removemedia plf
Then use the easyurpmi page to select a mirror in your part of the world and show you the appropriate urpmi.addmedia commands. You can copy/paste those commands into a Konsole logged in as root.

These are just links to ftp sites. You may want to visit these ftp sites using a browser first to confirm the directories and files are still there, although easyurpmi seems to be kept up to date.

What part of the world are you in? I know of companies in the UK that will put any distro you want on CD and mail it to you for a very small fee. Your local Linux User Group very probably has copies of all the major distributions too.

To remove all urpmi sources, its easier to do
Code:
#urpmi.removmedia -a
I am sure there are urpmi mirrors that still support MDK 9.1, so once you select the right architecture and setup the sources properly you should be able to upgrade your system. Don't expect to get the latest packages or features, the upgrades will just be for security issues. If you want the latest releas then install 2005LE or wait for 2006. To get the laest releases shipped to you, get them at cheeplinux or linuxemporium. If you subscribe to Linux Format, they include several distros on their dvd every month.
