Can't start X/gdm3 in Debian Wheezy w/ ATI Radeon HD 6310 on Toshiba Satellite c855

I have been having a lot of problems trying to get Debian Wheezy installed on a Toshiba Satellite C855 laptop. Currently, I am trying to figure out why I cannot boot into X.

During the boot process, when it says that it's going to load gdm3, it just goes to a blank screen with a blinking cursor. It doesn't freeze the computer, and it doesn't crash -- I am able to use Alt+Fx to switch to the terminal screens ... but it never loads. It just sits there indefinitely.

I have installed firmware-linux-nonfree and I have tried using the fglrx drivers as well as the open source radeon drivers. Both result in the same thing.

Can someone please help me figure out how to get this working?

Here is the output of lspci -nn:

You can't use the open source radeon driver if you are disabling kernel modesetting (KMS) by passing nomodeset to the kernel as you are.

Thank you. I get this error message whether I pass nomodeset in grub or not. Does this mean that nomodeset is enabled by default? How would I change this? I've seen in other places that I could pass radeon.modeset=1 to the kernel, but when I try this I also get the same error message about "no kernel modesetting". What do I need to do?

Would it help for me to install an unstable/testing/backports version of X maybe? If so, what's the most reliable way to do this?

Also, is it possible for me to just run X with vesa for now, or some generic video driver instead of using radeon, just so I can at least get into X? How would I do this?

When you're not using nomodeset, grab the output of dmesg and show it to us.

You should be able to use the vesa Xorg driver, but you will need to create an xorg.conf file that specifies only the vesa driver.

I am not passing nomodeset to the kernel.

Ater running modprobe radeon, I get the error radeon_uvd: Can't load firmware "radeon/SUMO_uvd.bin" , so I downloaded the ucode file SUMO_uvd.bin from this site, and placed it into /lib/firmware/radeon ... before loading the module, /proc/fb contains 0 EFI VGA ... afterwards, it contains 0 radeondrmfb

Anyhow, I am now able to start X, and get to the Gnome desktop, but the mouse and keyboard do not work (I can't even switch back to the terminal with CTRL+ALT+F1, and have to reboot) ...

After running modprobe radeon, here is the output of dmesg:

Code:
