I'm trying to install the Gnometal gtk+ theme from themes.freshmeat.net. I've dowloaded the .gz file, opened the theme manager, pointed it to the file, and clicked install, but the only thing I see is a dialog or 2 flash and disappear before I can read what it says.

I used kpackage to install the gnome-themes-extra package, and the included themes were installed. I also installed most of the gtk2-engine packages I could find.

I'm running simplyMEPIS 2004.01 (2.6.7 kernel version) with gnome 2.6.1. Does anyone have an idea of what's going on, or maybe how I could capture the output of those dialogs? Thanks.

The freshmeat page only links to the icon theme, not the GTK theme, so pick up both here instead. cd to ~/.themes (create the directory if not existant) and untar the GTK theme: tar xfvz /path/to/gnometal_gtk2_v2.tar.gz
Then go to ~/.icons (same here - create the dir if it doesn't exist) and untar the icons package.
