Can't see VNC server from windows
 

I have installed VNC on a winblows and Linux machine (redhat 8.0). I sed the rpm file from rpmfind.net and installed it. I can view a windows sessions from Linux, however when I try to view a Linux session from Windows i cannot connect. Just to be sure I took all restrictions off of IP tables and it is wide open. IS ther anything I need to configure or something so I can see the X sessions from windows? VNC seems to be running, I used the proper syntax.

first, did you install the viewer or the server? in windows they are the same package, but I dont believe they are the same in Linux. Try to Telnet to you linux box, login and give the "vncserver" command. at this point it should tell you the hostname and display for your server session. IE smbsvr:1. if it does not, you might not have installed the server. Then, using either your hostname or your box's ip address, run vnc viewer on windows to try to connect. The login will be the same as the one you used in telnet. Also, I may be mistaken, but i dont believe you can use this setup as root (prolly a good thing) hope this helps.

as far as i know run the vnc server from your linux box and the viewer from windows and voilia

I thought so too. VNC is on the Linux box and wors file. I ran the install as instructed. What gets me as I can view from Linux to Windows, not the other way.

when you telnet in, what do you get after envoking the vncserver?

I got it. I have used VNC for windows over terminal srver a few times. To make it work in windows it's hostname plus session. For example:

192.167.1.8:2 then ok


or hostname:2 or 3 or whatever.

If you use VNC from windows to Windows it just the hostname.
