I should see the layer mask when I alt - click on the thumbnail of the layer mask.
However it doesn't work. The ctrl - click works ok and the alt works on other programs. I'm using redhat 9 - Gnome - The gimp v 1.2.3.

I have it installed both in Linux and windows, but I hardly ever use it - the interface drives me nuts! (When I open a large image, it hides all the tool stuff...)
