Can't reinstall CUPS after removing ESP Print Pro

Hi all,

I used CUPS for few months on a Debian machine (about 5 months ago). Since I had formatting problems with a big HP plotter (DJ1050) I turned to the company that develops CUPS (ESP) for help.
I had to install their software but after 3 Months of trying they didn't manage to solve my problem :-/

Today I tried to uninstall their software so I could use CUPS again (since I only had a trial licenses). The problem is: I can't reinstall CUPS!

What did I try?
1.apt-get install cupsys
---> than I get: Reading Package Lists... Done

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
I've shortened the messege but it is the same for all packages

2. Than I tried:
apt-get -f install
but I get the same messege

3. Than I tought I should delete the packages by my own:
dpkg --remove printpro-unisys

got the same error here too...

So my questions:
1. What is wrong?
2. How can I install CUPS again??

Many thanks for any tips!

if I try to open usr/sbin/cupsd with winSCP I get the following:
Cannot open remote file '/usr/sbin/cupsd'.
No such file or directory.
Error code: 2
Error message from server: No such file
Request code: 3

But I can see the file... wait... I can see it is a link to a different file but it has a red arrow instead of the normal white arrow...

he?

it seems to me like cupsd is simply missing...
Because of that apt-get fails to remove some packages before the installation.

I tried it with the -f (fix-broken) flag but nothing there :(

Anyone got an idea?

this is what I get if I run apt-cache show printpro-unisys:

ztlx05:~# apt-cache show printpro-unisys
Package: printpro-unisys
Status: deinstall ok half-installed
Maintainer: Easy Software Products
Architecture: i386
Version: 4.5.10
Config-Version: 4.5.10
Depends: printpro
Description: ESP Print Pro
Copyright: 1993-2005 by Easy Software Products, All Rights Reserved.
UNISYS printer drivers

so is it half-uninstalled??

The /usr/sbin/cupsd file is linked to the file 'cupsd-nopam'

Could one of you maybe look to which file his cupsd file is pointing? Maybe I could re-point the link the the correct file in case uninstalling stuff messed up the link...

Thas would be great!

Thanks, Dekers

when I run 'locate cup' I find cupsd-nopam in /usr/sbin/ but when I go there - I can't find any trace to this file. When is wrong here??
